Baby Shower Decor

by Charmaine L. Smoot

Looking for a surefire way to have everyone talking about your great baby shower weeks after the event is over? Here’s the simple answer: set the mood from the moment the ladies walk into the party with fabulous decorations. Attractive and fun baby shower decorations add to the energy and fun of the event, and the secret to successfully choosing these decorations is simple: Set a theme! Having a theme instantly answers questions about all the other parts of the party: color, general decorations, wall decorations, table decorations and food.

Baby Shower Theme

There are endless theme possibilities. Let your imagination and circumstances guide you. Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

– Nursery Rhymes – Classic.

– Tea Party – Perfect if you know the baby is a girl.

– Disney Characters – We all have fond memories of our Disney pals!

– Diaper Party – Send out diaper-shaped invitations, use diaper cut-outs in the decor, and have guests bring diaper packets.

– Stuffed Animals – Who hasn’t fallen in love with at least one stuffed animal?

– Barefoot and Pregnant – Is the expectant mother the first one in her group to have a child? Let her know everyone’s behind her by asking guests to come to a “Barefoot and Pregnant Party” dressed in stuffed shirts to signify their “pregnancy” (yes, even the male guests!).

Color

Let your chosen theme help you select the color for the shower. What if your theme is color-independent? Then you can always fall back on the old stand-by of allowing blue to signify an expected boy, pink for a girl, or either yellow or green when the baby’s sex isn’t known. White has also emerged as a popular baby shower color to symbolize innocence and purity. Whatever color or colors you decide on, let them help to unify the other elements of your shower.

General Decor

Whatever theme you choose, there are items almost every baby shower should have. Balloons, streamers, and banners set a festive tone, and displaying balloons in front of the house will also help guests identify the location of the baby shower.

There’s no better way to remind all the guests of the real reason for the get-together than by having a completely “done” baby crib near the entrance to the party. Then, not only is the tone for the event set perfectly, but the baby crib can also be used as a stunning gift table.

Table Decor

A baby-themed tablecloth with matching disposable tableware, baby cloth diapers as placemats, and themed centerpieces are popular baby shower decorations. For unique centerpieces, use stuffed animals holding small baskets filled with baby shower favors.

Other options for table decorations include a diaper cake, and a vase of fresh flowers with the color of the theme. Decorated diapers hanging on a clothesline, baby bracelet napkin holders, cookies in the shape of babies or animals, a stork placed outside the door, and baby figurines will add to the light-hearted spirit of the event.

Matching tableware such as plates, cups, spoons, forks, and napkins in the same color are simple and effective ways to round out the theme. Many party supply stores carry a wide variety of these items for the shower. White tablecloths sprinkled with animal-shaped confetti completes the table.

Food

Food selections can be either home-made or store-bought. A white layer cake, macaroons, white chocolate candies, marshmallows, yogurt-covered raisins or nuts can be purchased easily at the local grocery store. Milk served in clear plastic baby bottles and vanilla ice-cream are another great idea. Favorite party favors for the guests are white chocolate-covered almonds placed in white baby booties and tied with a white satin ribbon.

There are so many ways to creatively decorate a baby shower. Be an imaginative host and use this occasion to not only honor the expectant mother and her child but to sharpen your creative muscles. Hopefully, the ideas we’ve presented will prime the pump and set you on your way to a successful shower. Have fun!
